Málaga: A gem and fast becoming a MICE destination hot spot

Málaga, located in the Andalusian region and on Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast, is rich in history, cultural diversity, and beauty.  Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Romans lived here over the past 2,000 years.  The city is one of tradition and modern expression.  Málaga is fast becoming more enticing for MICE groups to hold incentives, meetings, and events.  The city boasts a wonderful, coastal year-round climate. This modern, contemporary city offers a multitude of activities in culture, art, leisure activities, and of course dining.

With the airport less than 20 minutes away, Málaga has 51 hotels to select from with over 4300 rooms and numerous special venue options for groups.  The beautiful beaches lend to teambuilding activities and a variety of watersports.  The historical city center is rich in culture including the Picasso Museum, the Cathedral, and the Roman theatre.  It also offers exquisite dining with many options for groups.   It is no wonder Málaga is a leading destination for MICE tourism.

Málaga is a cosmopolitan and culture-rich destination.  The city has added many museums over the past several years with 37 in total.  It is truly a city of art and museums.

Noteworthy cultural places worthy of visiting include The Pompidou. This museum resides in the “mile of art” and displays 20th and 21st-century works of art by Frida Kahlo, Marc Chagall, and Fernand Léger, as well as offers music and dance performances. Also, within the “cube” there are interactive workshops, activities, and special exhibitions.  The Pompidou, in its modern design and cool vibe, represents community and the artistic spirit.

Alcazaba.  This is a must-see when in Málaga.  Covering the 8th-11th century time, this Arab fortress is a symbol of the city and home to the Archaeological Museum, containing ancient pieces from the Phoenician and Roman times.

The Picasso Museum.  Málaga was the birthplace of Picasso so it is fitting that the city opened a museum in 2003 displaying his work. This is also in the City Center.

The Cathedral.  This Renaissance architectural beauty, built between 1528 and 1782, is also called “La Manquita”, meaning one-armed woman, referring to its unfinished right tower. The interior reflects Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The Málaga Convention Bureau promotes Málaga as a destination for incentives, meetings, and conventions. They also consult, offering advice on hotels and services to assist in incentive or meeting planning.

For meetings and events, consider the Málaga Fair Trade and Congress Center.  With over 60,000 square meters of space, this multi-purpose and modern center is perfect for MICE events.  There are 2 pavilions for exhibition space, 2 auditoriums, a partially open central patio, 4 conference areas, a spacious hall, and a restaurant/catering area.  It offers many options and, notably, each area is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Málaga offers many other options for MICE groups with modern facilities and a variety of unique venues.  The Botanical Historical Garden is a popular venue with many options for events in the gardens or among the historical exhibits.  Another popular option is using the Picasso Museum that has 4 meeting rooms.  Groups can enjoy an off-hours tour with cocktails in the courtyard, hold art workshops, or use the auditorium for video conferences.   Lemonar 40 offers many options with 6 meeting rooms and the ability to host up to 350 for a cocktail party.  The catering is exquisite and each event is done with decorative details.  Finca El Realengo is beautiful with an estate on a pond surrounded by a tropical forest.  There you can host meetings up to 300, private dinners, workshops, etc.  During your stay in Málaga, you will have so many venues to choose from for your group events.  Check out this website for a listing of many unique venues available.   Spain Convention Bureau

Consider Málaga for your next MICE program.  It offers sunny days, ocean breezes, amazing food, a wonderful hotel selection, and many tours and activity options for groups.  I have taken incentive groups here and found the city has so much to offer that it was hard deciding on which activities to offer the  group.  You won’t be disappointed.
