Madrid. A city that exudes energy at every turn, with a non-stop vibrancy that is projected through its history, cuisine and culture that make it a 5-star international destination. With the re-opening of some award-winning hotels, and even some new hotels on the horizon, it’s no wonder people are flocking back to the city that offers such a wide variety of options for MICE travelers.
The city was just awarded the World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination at the World Travel Awards. With this new recognition, Madrid has a total three international meetings tourism awards this year. With all of this, the city of Madrid has now cemented its position as the best destination in the world for operating professional meetings and events, edging out cities like Paris, Dubai, Singapore, and Las Vegas to do so. The Tourism Department, through the Madrid Convention Bureau, is working on a positioning plan to revive meetings tourism in the city post Covid. emphasis will continue to be placed on the creation of tools to ensure international professional meeting managers know that Madrid has successfully adapted to become a reliable destination.
To kick off the summer season, Madrid will play a leading role in the recovery of the tourism sector, kick-started by the International Tourism Trade Fair, FITUR. The City Council of Madrid took part in this exclusive event held this past May, presenting its sustainable tourism model goals to industry professionals and the public. This is a move that created opportunities along the entire tourism segment and put the hallmarks of quality and safety at its forefront. From an exclusive space in Pavilion 9 C03 shared with the Regional Government of Madrid, the City Council joined the main representatives of the capital’s tourism sector in promoting the attractions and latest events that secured Madrid as a world-leading urban destination.
To that point, there is no doubt Madrid is the city to be seen. Within the past month, Madrid has been preparing for the long-awaited moment to once again – unveil – their luxury tourism market. It has taken some time, but, over a year into the start of the pandemic, luxury tourism is opening up again to the world to recover a millionaire business – that places Madrid among the main destinations for tourists with great purchasing power. There are several upscale hotels that are newly re-opened in Madrid (including the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid (operating as of September 2020) and the Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid (operating as of April 2021). If you are looking for high-end luxury, look no further than either one of these crown jewels of the city. The director of the Ritz hotel, Greg Liddell, had assured the Spanish publication Invertia that the luxury hotel market “would be the first to recover”. So much so, that they expect occupancy at 75% by the end of the year, and prices of their rooms will range between 650 and 15,000 Euros. Experts in the luxury hotel sector are confident in a comeback as this segment in the market has more ability to afford longer stays. However, the Four Seasons and the Ritz will not be the only luxury hotels that will be available to visitors. Rosewood Hotels & Resorts will reopen the Villa Magna, under construction for a year, at the end of 2021. Also, by the end of the year, in the former headquarters of Monte de Piedad, Marriott will open The Madrid Edition. Héctor Coronel, Director of Tourism of the Madrid City Council, believes that “the new brands put Madrid on the map of the world luxury offer and we have many resources to attract high-level tourists”, which is the main objective leading into the year.
And there are even more hotels and venues to emerge! Some of these include the Atocha Hotel Madrid, Tapestry Collection by Hilton (June 2021), Hard Rock Hotel, (slated for July 2021), JW Marriott Madrid, (2022) and the Radisson Red Madrid (2022). The city will once again welcome all – boasting something for everyone. There are also unique meeting venues and spaces that Madrid proudly offers. From The Galería Canalejas, giving Madrid a different concept of what constitutes a luxury department store and a new lifestyle of leisure, to Green Patio (a green space committed to the environment) built for product presentations, congresses, showrooms, pop-up stores, team buildings, workshops, exhibitions, dinners, and amazing meetings. Be sure to also check out MEEU (a multi-space, multi-offer and multi-content center of experiences) and RACE (which has organized fully, customizable events since 1967).
As you can see, Madrid is now more ready than ever to welcome visitors back. And with the necessary health and safety measures in place, the city is a guaranteed win for every type of guest and event. With the focus being on welcoming back travelers in a safe way, the goal will be to continue to deliver a great guest experience in every way. Madrid is a city with so much to offer – as they continue to aspire to be the standard benchmark in our new age of tourism. Contact the Madrid Convention Bureau for more information. We can’t wait to see you there!
