Tempting Travelers to… What’s Next

2020 usually means clear Vision.  For many this year has brought our vision into sharp focus as to what is important in our businesses and lives, and for Fiona Knight, Tempting Travellers to What’s Next is an ongoing and necessary process as we venture into another wave of global pandemic.

i-Meet’s Planner Confidence Index is based on a weekly survey that records and trends the evolving opinions of meeting professionals on when they expect to resume in person events.  The survey began the first week in April, 2020 and the most recent results show 47% of planners expect their next F2F event to be in 2nd half of 2021 and 70% of planners currently have events booked and contracted in 2020 and/or 2021.

Incentive Travel shows a hint of optimism—but still a long road back to what will be a very different incentive industry say initial findings of the annual Incentive Travel Industry Index, joint research between the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence Foundation, the Incentive Research Foundation and Financial & Insurance Conference Professionals, as outlined in Preview Meetings and Incentuves magazine.

According to Rick Luna, The Meetings Professional Editor in Chief at Meeting Professional International there’s a much needed sense of optimism in the air, as more than 58 percent of respondents to the Meeting Professional International survey expect favorable business conditions over the next year.  Tough times still await, as the majority of respondents (65 percent) believe business won’t return to pre-coronavirus levels until 2022 or 2023.

We’re starting to see glimmers of the return to face-to-face meetings taking place with the first event at the new CAESARS FORUM in Las Vegas last month and the MPI World Education Congress (WEC) in Grapevine. In each case, health protocols have been the top priority for in-person attendees, while events have also offered engagement via digital platforms for remote attendees.

There’s another issue that also gives optimism about our future. MPI’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s accomplishments demonstrated a true commitment to focus on solutions and the impact of diversity, inclusion and equity within our industry. We’re not there yet, but thanks to committee co-chairs Tanida Mullen and Zoe Moore we are inspired and optimistic about the future. They have put true meaning into the phrase “When We Meet, We Change the World.”

So where are we #TemptingTravellersto next? It’s official! Queensland, Australia will reopen from 1am on December 1, 2020. Australia and New Zealand are holding the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Olympics will be held in Japan in 2021 so plans are well underway for these locations. Elsewhere around the globe here’s a taste of what you can expect from leading suppliers, destinations and venues at IBTM WORLD VIRTUAL 2020  to enhance your meetings, events and experiences in 2020 and beyond:

  • Curated Best Mice products for groups based on their uniqueness, and according to their budget including all the now desired-elements in its packages including sustainable activities and more.
  • Hybrid events, new technologies, and live-streaming are becoming natural features for in-person events and for venues. • Health & Safety Guidebooks produced in cooperation with local tourism and event industry associations.
